TCS Secretary-General LEE Hee-sup attended the SIIS International Conference on Global Review and Outlook 2024, held on November 14, 2024, at the Jinjiang Hotel in Shanghai. Organized by the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), the conference, themed “Seeking Common Ground in a Turbulent World,” provided a platform for global leaders to discuss the shifting international landscape and strategies for fostering cooperation amid rising uncertainties.
In Session 1, titled “The Multipolarizing World: A Process Growing in Complexity, Diversity, and Uncertainty,” SG LEE delivered a speech highlighting the achievements of trilateral cooperation among China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. He emphasized the success of the cooperation framework since its inception in 1999, which includes 21 ministerial-level meetings, over 70 consultative mechanisms, and more than 100 collaborative projects. He also pointed out the growing challenges posed by geopolitical tensions, protectionism, and economic fragmentation, emphasizing the need for strengthened efforts to sustain the free trade system and reinforce multilateralism to navigate these transitions.
SG LEE reaffirmed the TCS’s unwavering commitment to fostering regional stability and cooperation. He emphasized the importance of trilateral collaboration as a cornerstone for addressing shared challenges, such as economic fragmentation, climate change, and demographic shifts. He highlighted how the concerted efforts of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea could serve as a model for international cooperation, promoting peace and shared prosperity not only within the region but also on a global scale. Concluding his remarks, he expressed confidence that the insights and discussions from the conference would not only help shape a more equitable and sustainable international order but also advance the TCS’s mission in navigating this critical period of transition.
