Mechanisms 18th TRIPO Heads Meeting among CNIPA, JPO, and KIPO in Wuhan, China

The 18th TRIPO Heads Meeting among the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), Japan Patent Office (JPO) and Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), was held in Wuhan, China, on December 13, 2018. The meeting was chaired by Mr. SHEN Changyu, Commissioner of CNIPA, attended by Ms. MUNAKATA Naoko, Commissioner of JPO and Mr. PARK Won-joo, Commissioner of KIPO, and Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) delegation headed by Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) Ms. HAN Mei, attended the meeting as an observer. 6th TRIPO User Symposium was held on the same day after the 18th TRIPO Heads Meeting.
At the meeting, DSG HAN Mei delivered a speech introducing about TCS and contributions to trilateral cooperation achieved by TCS. She emphasized that next year is the 20th anniversary of the official opening of cooperation between China, Japan and Korea, and TCS is ready to work together with relevant departments of the three countries to promote cooperation in various fields, including intellectual property cooperation, to a new level of development. With appreciation, the commissioners of TRIPO recognized the commitment of the TCS promoting trilateral cooperation.
At the meeting, the three commissioners introduced each country’s current status and had in-depth discussions on various topics for trilateral cooperation activities regarding the field of Intellectual Property (IP). Considering the fact that the three countries account for more than half of the patent applications from the world and the number of applications across the three countries has been increasing, they shared a common view to emphasize and further strengthen trilateral cooperation among the three offices. At the end of the meeting, the three commissioners signed the Record of Discussion which addressed the future plan of cooperation.
Followed by the Heads Meeting, the 6th TRIPO User Symposium was held under the theme of “New Era, Stronger IP Protection.” At the symposium, representatives from IP offices of China, Japan, and ROK, and experts from private sector from the three countries presented the policies and practices to correspond to new technologies triggered by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
After the user symposium, Mr. JIANG Chaoliang, Secretary of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee; Chairman of the Standing Committee of Hubei Provincial People’s Congress and Mr. WANG Xiaodong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee; Governor of Hubei Provincial People’s Government met commissioners of three IP offices and DSG HAN. At the meeting, Mr. JIANG welcomed commissioners of three IP offices for holding 18th TRIPO heads meeting in Hubei province. Mr. JIANG also introduced about Hubei province and achievements that Hubei province has made in IP area. Commissioners of three IP offices appreciated Hubei province for the support to trilateral cooperation of IP. Two parties exchanged the views on promoting IP cooperation.
TRIPO Heads Meeting has been held since 2001 and TRIPO Symposium has been held since 2013 both by the three IP Offices, and TCS has been participating as an observer since 2014. The next TRIPO Heads Meeting and Symposium will be held in Japan in 2019.
